Gateway Domestic Violence Services, a steadfast ally since 1979, is the sole agency dedicated to supporting domestic violence victims in Aurora and Arapahoe County. Formerly known as Gateway Battered Women’s Shelter, Inc., they offer a range of crucial services, including a 24/7 crisis line, shelters, counseling, court advocacy, and empowerment programs. Inclusivity is at the heart of their mission, serving women, men, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ individuals, with 25% being dependent children. Beyond the ordinary, their Bailey Project provides emergency shelter for family pets, addressing a critical need for those escaping domestic violence. Gateway is not just an organization; it’s a compassionate force driving positive change for those affected by domestic violence.

Problem

The only DV shelter in Aurora was in need of a seasoned Executive Director to take over following some issues and conflicts with the previous leader. In addition to having a restrictive budget, this also left the nonprofit with an aggressive timeline with which to work.
 

Solution

Birdie utilized a full-cycle search, which includes a complete soup-to-nuts walkthrough of the entire recruitment process. Because of the issues with previous leadership, it was key that this new Executive Director be thoroughly vetted by the Search Committee and Board. Our process gave multiple touch points between those parties and the candidates, allowing them to be assessed in differing environments. There was also a need for staff input, and we set up a casual environment in which employees could assess the candidates and provide feedback for the Search Committee to take into consideration.

Results

Gateway hired a candidate with decades of experience in the field of Domestic Violence with a warmth required to take on the position and regain trust from various stakeholders, including staff.
